Board Skills Matrix Assessment
Board Skills Matrix Assessment
A typical skills matrix is incomplete - in a way that's easy to live with, until a decision exposes it.
This assessment gives Chairs, Directors, CEOs, and Company Secretaries a structured, board-level read on whether the current skills matrix is doing useful governance work - and and a reasoned conclusion on what, if anything, to do next.
It is designed for boards that want to understand whether their matrix is useful for renewal, recruitment, committee design, director development, and board discussion.
What it covers
Ten questions across three areas:
- matrix purpose, criteria and use
- capability concentration, committee reliance and behavioural capability
- renewal, action and record discipline
What you receive
- A completable Board Skills Matrix Assessment (PDF with response fields)
- An interpretation of the gaps and uncertainties identified in your responses
- A reasoned conclusion, including whether any further action is needed
- A one-page summary you can share with the Chair, CEO or Company Secretary, or table at a board meeting
This is for your board if
- your skills matrix mainly records experience, tenure, or credentials
- most directors appear strong across most areas
- one or two directors carry a large part of the board’s capability or judgement load
- committee expertise is being treated as whole-board capability
- renewal conversations feel personal or easy to defer
- the matrix is completed annually and rarely used in board decisions
- board records could overstate what the matrix proves
